Disposable vapes are BANNED. Are nicotine pouches next?
Posted by Marlon Richards onIn response to the Government's recent call for public opinion on smoking and vaping, it appears likely that new regulations will be introduced for nicotine pouches in the UK.
Do nicotine pouches seem to be on their way out?
In response to the open consultation, the UK Government stated that age restrictions for nicotine pouches are already possible. As with nicotine vapes and non-nicotine containing vapes, the Government proposes restricting nicotine pouches with these powers. There are no plans to ban nicotine pouches outright at this time, but restrictions could be imposed such as age restrictions and nicotine warnings. In addition, underage people cannot receive free samples of these products, and packaging cannot be disproportionately appealing to children. The Labour government does plan to reintroduce the bill in some capacity.
The Potential Negative Effects Of Banning Nicotine Pouches
According to statistics, Nicotine Pouch usage is on the rise among adults in the UK, and the trend has continued to grow year on year as more people become aware of the product and availability increases. Adults who have given up smoking are choosing this method of nicotine replacement therapy as their preferred method of nicotine replacement therapy even though consumption levels aren't as high as E-cigarette usage levels. In fact, some people have quit vaping and only use Nicotine Pouches as they want to get their nicotine fix without inhaling anything into their lungs. The main aim being achieved here is that they are not smoking cigarettes, and they’re enjoying a no tobacco nicotine option that poses next to no risk compared to what cigarettes do to a person’s health. If this option was taken away from them and Nicotine Pouches do end up being banned in the UK, it’s going to leave a lot of people in a tight spot on what to do. This would then have the opposite effect on the Government’s goal of England becoming a smoke-free country because smoking rates will start to rise again. It’s understandable that the government wants to create a smoke-free generation as well as protect young people who are not of legal either smoking or vaping age from being teased to try these products. But any new legislation bought in must have some consideration for those of legal age who may be relying on them to abstain from cigarettes.
